The LIT Lighting Design Awards are officially open for submissions, inviting the world’s most innovative lighting designers to be part of its 2025 celebration of excellence. This distinguished event is renowned for recognizing the pinnacle of creativity and innovation in the lighting design industry. The program boasts an impressive array of categories, with 31 in Architectural Lighting Design, 15 in Entertainment Lighting Design, and 44 in Lighting Product Design.

In 2024, the program received over 800 submissions from 58 countries, showcasing a breathtaking spectrum of design. Notable winners included Studio ZNA, led by Zerlina Hughes, who received the top honor in Architectural Lighting Design for their work on Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Takahiro Matsuo of Lucent won in Entertainment Lighting Design for The Creation, a dazzling installation featuring 20,000 suspended acrylic spheres. In Lighting Product Design, Evgenii Vetlugin and Eduard Bochanov of Pipe Lighting GmbH were recognized for their innovative, eco-friendly LED system designed for film sets.

The LIT Lighting Design Awards honor a visionary lighting designer with the Lifetime Achievement Award each year. In 2024, this prestigious accolade was awarded to Allen Lee Hughes, a pioneer whose five-decade career has profoundly influenced lighting design in theatre, opera, and dance. The 2024 Spotlight Prize recognizes the “Brighten the Future of Gaza’s Children” initiative, highlighting the positive impact lighting can have beyond design.

Past jurors have included industry leaders such as Sooner Routhier, CEO of The Playground, Roland Greil from Roland Greil & The Black Project, Emmy Award Winner Peter Morse, and Randy Reid, Editor at Designing Lighting (dl), among others.

To ensure winners receive the recognition they deserve, the LIT Lighting Design Awards has partnered with global media like V2com, D5mag.com, and DesignWanted. Market Street Reimagined is an international call for ideas that identify new urban possibilities for downtown San Francisco’s Market Street, responding to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, remote work, and other cultural changes. This is a time to think differently, to escape the traps embedded in techniques and assumptions of the past, and venture into the speculative possibilities of an urbanism not yet discovered. Using San Francisco’s Market Street as a subject, we ask competitors “How might a new set of ideas be developed to address the challenges in post-pandemic city cores enabling them to flourish in ways that are economically viable and experientially uplifting?” Co-Sponsored by the Urban Land Institute San Francisco (ULI SF) and the Civic Joy Fund, the competition is open to all who have vision toward the future and has a $100,000 prize fund.

Ideas of all scales and topics are welcomed, including physical, spatial, operational, use, economic, policy, and any other strategies that can produce positive outcomes. The goal is to generate exciting, transformative visions for Market Street that would make the City proud and attract visitors and businesses from around the globe.

The jury is hosted by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and is comprised of multi-disciplinary experts from the fields of planning, economics, real estate, architecture, landscape urbanism, philanthropy, academia, civic leadership, and the arts.

The London Festival of Architecture, in collaboration with the London Borough of Camden, is delighted to launch ‘Square’ Camden High Street – a new design competition that invites architects, designers, and artists to reimagine a key stretch of Camden High Street as a vibrant, inclusive public space.

As part of Camden’s ambitious trial pedestrianisation of Camden High Street, this open call seeks innovative proposals that breathe new life into the public realm, reflect the spirit of the area, and explore what a ‘square’ can mean in today’s urban context – spatially, socially, or playfully.

The winning team will have the opportunity to work closely with Camden Council to deliver a bold and creative intervention that enhances the everyday experience of this iconic high street and leaves a lasting legacy for its residents, businesses, and visitors.

Reclaiming the Street

Running from 2025 to 2026, Camden’s 18-month pedestrianisation trial will reclaim a section of Camden High Street from motor traffic and transform it into a safe, people-first environment. The design competition forms a centrepiece of this initiative, offering a platform to test fresh ideas for creating healthy, accessible and engaging public space.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, added, “The London Festival of Architecture competition is great news for Camden Town. Our trial pedestrianisation on Camden High Street is all about creating safer and healthier public places, and we’re looking forward to seeing how entries to the LFA can connect our communities and celebrate our grassroots culture.”

A Community-Driven Future

The Camden High Street Cultural Programme will run alongside the pedestrianisation from May 2025 to April 2026, showcasing a seasonally driven series of events that highlight the area’s rich cultural heritage and diverse communities.

Recent public consultation on the proposed changes received an overwhelmingly positive response, with support for thoughtful interventions such as outdoor seating, more greenery, and improved accessibility. The ‘Square’ Camden High Street competition builds directly on this momentum, aiming to deliver an installation that responds to local aspirations and inspires long-term change.

How to Enter

The competition is open to early-career and established practitioners alike. A total budget of approximately £100,000 + VAT has been allocated, including a £12,500 design fee for the winning team.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to develop their concepts in collaboration with local stakeholders, with the final design realised as part of the pedestrianisation trial.

The deadline for submissions is 12:00, Thursday 15 May 2025.
