Introducing the Kinderspace: Architecture for Children’s Development competition / Edition #2, an architectural challenge dedicated to crafting innovative educational spaces that enhance early childhood learning. As young children navigate their formative years, the environment in which they learn plays a pivotal role in their cognitive, emotional, and social development. Traditional educational settings often do not fully cater to the dynamism of early childhood, potentially stifling creativity and exploration.

This competition seeks to transform kindergarten design by creating environments that are not only safe and functional but also stimulating and inclusive. Participants are encouraged to conceive spaces that foster learning, creativity, and community interaction, using sustainable and innovative design solutions that promote healthy development. 

With the flexibility to select a site within their home country, participants have the unique opportunity to integrate their designs within diverse community settings, potentially revitalizing underutilized areas. The Kinderspace #2 competition is more than just designing educational facilities; it’s about enriching communities and enhancing the educational landscapes to nurture the youngest members of our society. Participants are invited to think beyond conventional boundaries and develop spaces that inspire, educate, and connect. 

PRIZES

3 winning proposals, 2 special award recipients and 6 honourable mentions will be selected. Buildner will award a total of 10,000 € in prize money to competition winners as follows:

1st Prize – 5,000 €
2nd Prize – 2,500 €
3rd Prize – 1,000 €

+ 6 honourable mentions

Buildner Student Award – 1000 €
Buildner Sustainability Award – 500 €

The Seattle Design Festival (SDF) is excited to announce our Call for Proposals for the 2025 Festival! As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of SDF, we invite designers, artists, community organizations, and creative thinkers to explore our theme: FEEDBACK.

 About the Theme

FEEDBACK fuels transformation, growth, and positive change. It’s the spark that ignites new ideas, strengthens connections, and helps us build a better future. At its best, FEEDBACK is an invitation—one that encourages curiosity, creativity, and collaboration across different perspectives.

This year, we ask:
– What happens when we treat FEEDBACK as a tool for discovery instead of just critique?
– What becomes possible when we engage in FEEDBACK with hope and humility?
– How can design create spaces for meaningful dialogue, reflection, and renewal?

 Ways to Participate

We are soliciting proposals for three Festival elements at the SDF Block Party (August 16 & 17):

Mainstage Program
– Format: In-person or virtual talks, performances, skill shares, or films
– Duration: 15-30 min (plus 30-minute max setup)

Pop-Up Experience
– Format: Hands-on activities, workshops, or design challenges
– Duration: 1-4 hours (plus 30-minute max load-in/out)

Built Installation
– Format: Temporary outdoor structures designed to engage the public
– Duration: Full weekend (18 hours + load-in on August 15 and load-out after 7pm on August 17)
– Commitment Level: Highest

June 18: Final Marketing Material Edits Due
August 15: Built Installation Load-In at Lake Union Park
August 16-21: 2025 Seattle Design Festival!
