RESURRECT 2021: Competition Brief

Syrian Migration

The Syrian refugee crisis stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict and displacement.  Millions have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring countries and beyond. This competition challenges participants to design a sensitive and innovative architectural solution that addresses the complex needs of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, focusing on creating a sense of place, community, and hope.

The Challenge

Design a transitional settlement for Syrian refugees in the Beqaa Valley, Lebanon. The settlement should not only provide essential shelter but also foster a sense of community and belonging, while respecting the local context and culture. Consider the following:

  • Context: The Beqaa Valley in Lebanon, a region significantly impacted by the influx of Syrian refugees.
  • Users: Syrian refugee families with varying needs and sizes.
  • Program: Housing units, community spaces, educational facilities, healthcare provisions, and spaces for economic opportunities.
  • Sustainability: Environmentally conscious design, utilizing local resources and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Respecting the cultural background of both the refugees and the host community.
  • Integration: Promoting integration and positive relationships between refugees and the local Lebanese population.
  • Dignity and Hope: Creating a space that instills a sense of dignity, hope, and normalcy for displaced families.

Submission Requirements

  • Drawings: Site plan, floor plans, sections, elevations, and perspectives.
  • Narrative: A concise description of the project, explaining the design concept and addressing the key challenges.
  • Model (Optional): A physical or digital model of the proposed settlement.

Judging Criteria

  • Innovation: Originality and creativity of the design solution.
  • Functionality: How well the design addresses the practical needs of the refugees.
  • Sustainability: Environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Respect for cultural heritage and local context.
  • Social Impact: The potential of the project to foster community and integration.
