The Seattle Design Festival (SDF) is excited to announce our Call for Proposals for the 2025 Festival! As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of SDF, we invite designers, artists, community organizations, and creative thinkers to explore our theme: FEEDBACK.

 About the Theme

FEEDBACK fuels transformation, growth, and positive change. It’s the spark that ignites new ideas, strengthens connections, and helps us build a better future. At its best, FEEDBACK is an invitation—one that encourages curiosity, creativity, and collaboration across different perspectives.

This year, we ask:
– What happens when we treat FEEDBACK as a tool for discovery instead of just critique?
– What becomes possible when we engage in FEEDBACK with hope and humility?
– How can design create spaces for meaningful dialogue, reflection, and renewal?

‘Square’ Camden High Street: A New Design Competition for Camden Town

Registration Deadline: May 15, 2025; Submission Deadline: May 15, 2025

The London Festival of Architecture, in collaboration with the London Borough of Camden, is delighted to launch ‘Square’ Camden High Street – a new design competition that invites architects, designers, and artists to reimagine a key stretch of Camden High Street as a vibrant, inclusive public space.

As part of Camden’s ambitious trial pedestrianisation of Camden High Street, this open call seeks innovative proposals that breathe new life into the public realm, reflect the spirit of the area, and explore what a ‘square’ can mean in today’s urban context – spatially, socially, or playfully.

The winning team will have the opportunity to work closely with Camden Council to deliver a bold and creative intervention that enhances the everyday experience of this iconic high street and leaves a lasting legacy for its residents, businesses, and visitors.

Reclaiming the Street

Running from 2025 to 2026, Camden’s 18-month pedestrianisation trial will reclaim a section of Camden High Street from motor traffic and transform it into a safe, people-first environment. The design competition forms a centrepiece of this initiative, offering a platform to test fresh ideas for creating healthy, accessible and engaging public space.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, added, “The London Festival of Architecture competition is great news for Camden Town. Our trial pedestrianisation on Camden High Street is all about creating safer and healthier public places, and we’re looking forward to seeing how entries to the LFA can connect our communities and celebrate our grassroots culture.”

A Community-Driven Future

The Camden High Street Cultural Programme will run alongside the pedestrianisation from May 2025 to April 2026, showcasing a seasonally driven series of events that highlight the area’s rich cultural heritage and diverse communities.

Recent public consultation on the proposed changes received an overwhelmingly positive response, with support for thoughtful interventions such as outdoor seating, more greenery, and improved accessibility. The ‘Square’ Camden High Street competition builds directly on this momentum, aiming to deliver an installation that responds to local aspirations and inspires long-term change.

How to Enter

The competition is open to early-career and established practitioners alike. A total budget of approximately £100,000 + VAT has been allocated, including a £12,500 design fee for the winning team.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to develop their concepts in collaboration with local stakeholders, with the final design realised as part of the pedestrianisation trial.

The deadline for submissions is 12:00, Thursday 15 May 2025.

Premise

The increasing demand for flexible workspaces coupled with the growing urgency for sustainable solutions necessitates a radical rethinking of how we design and inhabit our built environment. This competition challenges participants to envision a future where work and innovation can thrive beneath the surface, capitalizing on the inherent advantages of the underground realm. Imagine a space that seamlessly integrates with the earth, minimizing environmental impact while fostering a dynamic ecosystem for entrepreneurs, creatives, and innovators. The design should address the psychological and physiological needs of occupants in a subterranean environment, promoting well-being and productivity through innovative design strategies. Consider how natural light, ventilation, and connection to the surface can be achieved while celebrating the unique qualities of underground architecture.

Objective

The primary objective is to design an underground co-working and innovation hub that seamlessly integrates sustainable design principles with a functional and inspiring workspace. The design should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of geothermal energy utilization for heating, cooling, and potentially other power needs. Create a vibrant and stimulating environment that fosters collaboration and creativity, while simultaneously addressing the challenges of underground construction and ensuring the health and well-being of occupants. The design must incorporate strategies for natural light penetration, ventilation, and access to the surface, minimizing the sense of isolation often associated with subterranean spaces. The hub should be adaptable to diverse work styles and provide a range of amenities that support both individual focus and collaborative endeavors. The winning entry will exemplify a future where underground spaces can become vital centers for innovation and community.

Site

The proposed site for the Underground Co-Working and Innovation Hub is flexible, allowing participants to choose a location anywhere in the world. While the specific location is open-ended, the chosen site should be justified in the project narrative, explaining how its geological and geographical context informs the design. Participants are encouraged to consider sites with existing underground infrastructure or geological features that could be incorporated into the design. The site area can range from a minimum of 5,000 square meters to a maximum of 20,000 square meters, offering flexibility in scale and scope. This range encourages diverse interpretations of the brief, accommodating designs from smaller, specialized hubs to larger, multi-functional underground complexes. The chosen site should be realistically developable, considering potential constraints and opportunities presented by the underground environment.

Constraints

The design must adhere to sustainable building practices, minimizing environmental impact throughout the project lifecycle. The integration of geothermal energy is a mandatory requirement, with the design demonstrating its effective utilization for the hub’s energy needs. Participants should consider the challenges of underground construction, including excavation, waterproofing, structural stability, and material selection. A key constraint is ensuring adequate natural light penetration and ventilation within the subterranean space. Designs must address the potential psychological impacts of working underground, focusing on creating a stimulating and welcoming environment that promotes well-being. Accessibility for all users is paramount, with the design complying with relevant accessibility standards. Finally, while budgetary considerations are not a primary evaluation criterion, designs should demonstrate a degree of cost-effectiveness and feasibility within a reasonable construction budget, considering the specific location chosen.

Market Street Reimagined

Registration Deadline: Jun 1, 2025; Submission Deadline: Jun 1, 2025

Market Street Reimagined is an international call for ideas that identify new urban possibilities for downtown San Francisco’s Market Street, responding to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, remote work, and other cultural changes. This is a time to think differently, to escape the traps embedded in techniques and assumptions of the past, and venture into the speculative possibilities of an urbanism not yet discovered. Using San Francisco’s Market Street as a subject, we ask competitors “How might a new set of ideas be developed to address the challenges in post-pandemic city cores enabling them to flourish in ways that are economically viable and experientially uplifting?” Co-Sponsored by the Urban Land Institute San Francisco (ULI SF) and the Civic Joy Fund, the competition is open to all who have vision toward the future and has a $100,000 prize fund.

Ideas of all scales and topics are welcomed, including physical, spatial, operational, use, economic, policy, and any other strategies that can produce positive outcomes. The goal is to generate exciting, transformative visions for Market Street that would make the City proud and attract visitors and businesses from around the globe.

The jury is hosted by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and is comprised of multi-disciplinary experts from the fields of planning, economics, real estate, architecture, landscape urbanism, philanthropy, academia, civic leadership, and the arts.

XPERIENCE EARTH – Designing the Museum of Global Identity

Registration Deadline: Sep 30, 2025; Submission Deadline: Oct 10, 2025

INTRODUCTION

In response to the growing global call for unity, cultural preservation, and cross-cultural understanding, this design competition invites architects to conceive an experiential museum that serves as a powerful architectural embodiment of the world’s diverse nations, traditions, and identities. The proposed museum will function not only as a center for cultural learning but as a fully immersive, sensory-driven journey across continents — housed within a single, visionary structure that reflects the interconnectedness of humanity.

This museum will celebrate the full breadth of global culture — from the intricate textiles of West Africa to the ancient philosophies of East Asia, the vibrant festivities of South America, the nomadic traditions of Central Asia, the storytelling rituals of Indigenous communities, and the architectural marvels of Europe and the Middle East. Each space within the museum is to be designed not as a static exhibit, but as a dynamic, interactive environment that evokes the spirit, atmosphere, and daily life of the culture it represents. Visitors should be able to hear traditional music, touch handcrafted materials, smell regional spices and flora, and even engage in participatory experiences such as dance, craft-making, or ceremonial practices.

The architecture itself must reflect this diversity, while maintaining a harmonious and unified spatial language. Design teams are encouraged to interpret global influences thoughtfully — incorporating regional forms, materials, and spatial concepts into a contemporary, cohesive whole. The museum should stand as a cultural landmark: iconic in its presence, sensitive in its detailing, and compelling in its narrative.

Strategically, the museum will be composed of thematically or geographically organized zones, each offering a multi-sensory experience that encourages exploration, empathy, and engagement. Integrated technology, sustainable systems, and accessible design are expected to enhance the visitor experience while ensuring longevity and relevance for future generations.

This competition challenges architects to rethink the museum typology — to move beyond display cases and passive observation, and instead create a living, breathing space that reflects the depth, beauty, and diversity of the human experience. The final design must resonate not only as a building, but as a statement: that culture is not static, and neither should the spaces that celebrate it be.

OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of this experiential museum is to:

Immerse visitors in the sensory realities of different cultures through interactive installations, environments, performances, and technology-driven storytelling.

Create emotional connections that go beyond visual appreciation, engaging touch, sound, scent, and even taste to evoke authentic cultural moments.

Inspire empathy and global awareness by allowing visitors to “step into” other worlds and ways of life — fostering understanding through experience rather than observation.

Unify diverse architectural elements into a fluid design that honors each culture’s identity while forming one interconnected, symbolic structure.

Set a global benchmark for experiential learning in cultural institutions — a space where education and wonder go hand in hand.
